Okkervil River is an indie rock band from Austin, Texas. Formed in 1998, the band takes its name from a short story by Russian author Tatyana Tolstaya. Okkervil River consist of Scott Brackett (Trumpet/ Keyboards), Brian Cassidy (Vocals, Electric Guitar, Mandolin), Travis Nelsen (Drums), Patrick Pestorius (Bass), Will Sheff (Vocals/Guitar), Justin Sherburn (New Member) and Lauren Gurgiolo (New Member). Former member, Jonathan Meiburg (Vocals, Keyboards, Accordion) left the band to pursue as a singer and songwriter in his new band, Shearwater. The band has garnered positive critical reception, especially noted are each song’s lyrics, intricate instrumentation, and thematic albums. :-) Okkervil River play songs that are heart-felt and all songs written by them are actually beautiful poems that ought to be remembered for a long long time. Clever lyrics combined with music that are full of emotions and touch everyone’s heart upon listen. They are as big as the Amazon River. :-D

The Stand Ins is such a matured album that even Adult and Elderly People will fall in love with it. It’s definitely a perfect album for my parents’ wedding anniversary. :-) It has 3 tracks which are pure instrumentals.

“Stand Ins, One” is just 48 seconds long and is the intro to The Stand Ins. It started off slowly and gradually picked up and got louder. Accordian can be heard throughout this song and at times, it sounded creepy to me. Nonetheless, this track will get you ready and build up the tempo and excitement in you for the next track. :-)

What i love about “Lost Coastlines” apart from the awesome lyrics is its music. ;-) Patrick Pestorius’ playing of bass gets my head nodding each time i listen to this track. Not only that, the mandolin and trumpet also created an atmosphere as if i’m watching a big group of orchestra performance. As Will sings, “But we find the maps he sent to us don’t mention lost coastlines…”. he knows that they are lost on the shoreline.. And when it comes to the end, it will not be long when you finally find yourself singing along with Okkervil River.. “La, la, la…”

The beginning of “Singer Songwriter” resembles “Ain’t No Easy Way” by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club”, and it tells the story about a girl who has everything that she could ever ask for.. But due to this very same fact, she failed in everything she chose to do.. And nothing’s gonna change her world.. It’s also one of the loudest track on The Stand Ins where various guitar playings can be heard throughout this track. Beautiful country rock song where you can imagine a group of elderly people enjoying and dancing to this power-pop country rock track. :-D Love it!

“Starry Stairs” should have been the last track on this album. It just has the quality to end an album. :-) Will sings as if he is sad.. “If you don’t love me, i’m sorry”. It’s the most memorable moment on this track. As he goes on, he sings about how a girl that he loves, lied to him. He has no choice but to say goodbye.. All the Starry Stairs seem to be falling apart as he climbs.. Definitely a track to look out for on The Stand-Ins! Play this song if you found out that your girlfriend is lying to you or hiding something from you! :-) Make her know that you’re saying goodbye..

Clocking in at over 6 minutes long is “Blue Tulip”. The longest song on this album. Blue Tulip, again sings about a girl who lies.. “Hats off to my distant hope, a little lie, a puff of smoke…”, sings Will, and as he sings, i feel the pain he’s in. I feel sorry for him. Such a sad song that it’s impossible to ignore this powerful ballad which sings the way to your heart. And it’s one of the reasons Okkervil River is famous for! ;-)

“Stand Ins, Two” is another instrumental. A slow guitar plucking and piano playing. As if Okkervil River is taking a brief break from this album. :-)

As its title suggests, “Pop Lie” is about lies. A story about a man who lies in his pop songs. Thus, Pop Lie. :-) Damn, Okkervil River is good at it! They write songs that’s so complicated until i have to listen countlessly to Pop Lie before i could figure out the real meaning behind this song. A man who has so many fans, from kids to adults, lies whenever he sings. Is this the real world out there? You be the judge. Anyway, it’s a guitar-power-packed song that is so radio friendly! Cheers to Okkervil River!

“On Tour with Zykos” is specially written for Okkervil River’s past member, Jonathan Meiburg. Will wishes him all the best on his future undertaking… “Roll your crew on down the road, to the next sold out show… ” I really love the piano playing of this song. I can feel the friendship shared between Okkervil River and Jonathan. And it reminds me of the friendship shared between Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon. Incredible farewell song to Jonathan! :-D

“Calling and Not Calling My Ex” is a very radio-friendly track. At first listen, i already knew i would like this song. The beat and tempo of this song is just perfect that it’ll make you go on remembering this song, especially the beginning of this song. “God knows i’m feeling really stupid now, forever having said goodbye…” is the phrase that i always recall whenever i listen to this song. And another praise for the piano of this song. I just find it very appealing and infectious.. ;-)

“Stand Ins, Three”, another instrumental. Violin can be heard throughout this track until it subsides where it jump to another track… More or less, it’s the prelude to the next song…

“Bruce Wayne Campbell Interviewed on the Roof of the Chelsea Hotel, 19793 is the track that closes The Stand Ins. Before ending The Stand Ins, Okkervil River managed to close this album on thematic and anthemic note. This song is a slow ballad that Will sings, “Pull down the shades, let’s kill the morning…”, as if he’s disappointed and despair in love. But like most closing song, it ended on a high note, high spirit, trumpet, guitar and drums all came in together to make this a memorable one. Okkervil River have done it again! :-)

Rating: I’m speechless… I’m totally impressed with the lyrics written by Okkervil River. The have this ability to write songs with lyrics that are so cryptic that we have to think through the words in order to understand the real meaning behind those lyrics. Not only that, their music landscape and genre is so focused that they are becoming the pioneer in what they are doing. Beautiful and heart-felt songs all in The Stand Ins, i honestly give it 7.5 out of 10. Cheers!

Stand-Out Tracks (My Picks): Lost Coastlines, Singer Songwriter, Starry Stairs, Calling and Not Calling My Ex, On Tour with Zykos.

Cheers!

Singers That Deliver In The Studio!

March 19, 2010  //  Posted by: admin  //  Category: Singer

Singers that truly deliver in the studio are a breed apart. Let’s face it, not everyone can do it, and if they could, I wouldn’t be wasting time writing this article. And as a former talent booking agent with the William Morris Agency and professional singer, singing on many name brand spots like FOX TV, UPN Station ID’s, O’Charley’s and a host of others, I can tell you that singer’s who deliver in the studio, really can make the big bucks and create a real niche in the market for themselves.

Singing talent is a commodity just like any other line of work, but like a few select fields, the talent pool for individuals who can really deliver is somewhat limited. Starting with that premise knowing that many of you reading this article are most likely interested in studio work and singing in commercials, I will try and promote a few concepts that have helped me through the years and hopefully will help you as well.

Always remember the old adage that those who try hard are usually the luckier ones in life – not always, but because they are out there trying in whatever line of work it is and because they have a multitude of Fishing reels in the water, they usually end up with the bigger catch. Your fishing reel is going to obviously be your singing reel. What does your singing reel sound like that is your business card and aimed at trying to get you established as a session singer? It better be good – not the “I just cranked this out with a few riffs off a keyboard into a computer” good, but one that really facilitates the strengths of your voice and minimizes your weaknesses. Let’s face it, we all have some singing weaknesses to a certain degree or other. And you will find that you are usually called on for studio work where you shine and where your strengths prevail. At ReelMusician.com, we strive to always look at each singer and create custom jingle singer reels based upon the singers own unique set of singing characteristics – If you have any questions at all on your jingle reel, don’t hesitate to contact ReelMusician .com for an honest evaluation. But just remember to have an incredible sounding reel that truly sets your voice and vocal accomplishments out from the rest.

Let’s look at some various factors involved in your career. How much time are you currently putting into practice, vocal coaching, etc? I will suggest to you that you ought to be putting in at least 30 – 45 min’s a day minimum and this can be done in the shower, car, or in a vacant room free of distractions. You want to maximize your strengths and figure out where your weaknesses are. This is critical. I will also tell you that finding a good vocal coach, at least one that truly understands commercial singing and not just the theory they’ve been taught and continue to teach, will be hard. Most vocal coaches stress breathing exercises, posture and so forth, and that’s great, but I will tell you that many of the best singers that I have come across, break all of the golden singing rules and make a great living. I’m not suggesting that there are not better breathing patterns than others, nor will I negate a well postured singer, but coaches who truly teach the nuts and bolts of studio and session singing and not from a textbook, are extremely rare. Make sure you have a well informed and current vocal coach. For any questions regarding vocal coaching or obtaining a good vocal coach, you may contact the author.

Mariah Carey- Greatest Voice Of All Time Part 2 (Studio)

Your next step in you journey to becoming a successful jingle and commercial singer is going to be your relational connection with folks already established in the industry and your ability to put your incredible sounding demo in the hands of producers. You are going to want to start out by figuring out who the main players are in your area in terms of studio singers and contact those that look like you are not going to be in direct competition. You wouldn’t want to be helping someone who might be taking your studio work away and neither will they. I will tell you that singers in general, like to help up and coming singers in the field and investing time in relationships with key session singers will be rewarding with your singing success.

Following up with jingle houses, industrial music houses and studio engineers and producers will take a little investigation, but the conversations you have with session singers will undoubtedly have already given you more than enough names and companies to send your demo reel off to. Your reel ought to have your name, telephone number, year and season of the creation of your demo on virtually any thing that is sent out to producers. Your CD better have this in bright bold colorful letters on the front, the inside jacket and the actual CD. I’ve mentioned it before, but you are really better off sending a a hard copy CD rather than mp3, even though there is no cost associated with email, because 1) you don’t have permission to send via email and 2) it helps to actually see your name and reel, which by the way, can go into their car for review on their way home from work and an mp3 can not without burning a CD of it. If you are tired and extremely busy, are you really going to waste your time on someone you don’t know has clue or not about delivering the singing goods – probably not and neither will they most likely. Don’t email your demo as of yet. I would wait until you have established a relationship with the producer and submit follow up pieces if they ask for it.

I’ve mentioned this before, but having a second follow up reel can be a great boost for singing work and re-establishing your name by once again having your CD cross their desk one more time. This is great for a producer who almost called you for a singing session, but for whatever reason didn’t, and for the producer who somehow lost your CD and never really gave it a listen – In either case, it’s a great idea. I wish you all the best of luck and look forward to hearing about your singing success!

Infamously Single In Hollywood

March 07, 2010  //  Posted by: admin  //  Category: Singer

Some of the most popular articles in gossip magazines such as Star Magazine and the National Enquirer are those that probe into the private relationships of celebrities. Such magazines like to detail the latest hook ups, and break ups. Though those in Hollywood are known for the brevity in their relationships, there are just some female celebs that just seem to have great trouble both snagging and keeping a man. It just goes to how you that looks do not account for everything.

Naomi Campbell

Famous since the catwalking days of fellow supermodels Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista, this dark beauty cannot seem to keep an assistant or a personal companion. Campbell is known for her erratic temper and penchant for throwing cell phones and the like at those who raise her ire. She has been linked to such notable men as the prince of Dubai, Michael Stipe, with whom she was engaged, singer Usher, and actor Robert Deniro to name a few. However, a longer term commitment has eluded her and Campbell has never been linked to anyone for very long. The last reported hook up with Terrance Howard was unceremoniously denied by the actor who has proclaimed to still be in love with his ex wife.

Mariah Carey

This angelic voice burst onto the scene with the smash hit Vision of Love, which is ironic since love has seemed to elude the song bird. Carey was married to record executive Tommy Mottola, a man quite a few years older than her. The marriage did not outlive the hype of the fairy tale wedding as Mottola turned out to be more like a father and a husband and the two called it quite after a rather tumultuous union.

Warren Zevon Werewolves of Roselawn leave a comment

Carey has gone on to date others such as Latin American singer Luis Miguel, and notorious playboy Derek Jeter. She has also been linked to rapper Eminem, with whom she had a very public feud. Reportedly, Carey was leaving messages for the rapper who was apparently no longer interested in pursuing any romantic involvement with the singer. He released them to the media, and Carey labeled the messages as being misconstrued, and Eminem as being ungentlemanly for releasing the messages.

Carey is legendary for diva like behavior and demands. She has quite a bit of experience in many things, I wonder how long it will take for her to realize that men do not always want the high maintenance type no matter what your bank balance.

Paris Hilton

With Paris, one never knows if she cannot seem to keep a man or if a man cannot keep her. Though the difference between Hilton, and our two other ladies is that she is young and she just wants to have fun. Though shortly engaged to Paris Latsis, Hilton has been linked to just about everyone in young Hollywood, whether they are attached or not. Sometime boyfriend Stavros Niarchos is a boyfriend she snagged while he dated one of the Olsen twins, has the infamous sex tape with Shannen Doherty ex Rick Solomon, not to mention the very married MTV reality star Travis Barker.

No one knows what the future holds for these ladies, but I am guessing that life is easier in Tinseltown when you have someone to share it with.

Your Guide to Best Music Downloads

March 07, 2010  //  Posted by: admin  //  Category: Singer

Are you a bathroom singer like me? Oh! I don’t mean you are not a good singer. You are a good singer if you like to entertain yourself with good music. Maybe you cannot sing but that doesn’t mean you don’t like quality music! Rather, having ability to comprehend good music is a God’s gift to human beings. We taste music, we dance to music, and we live music! There is no part in the whole world where music is not liked. Different cultures and Religions have their own musical charms since centuries.

No wonder the person who doesn’t like music is a non-living object according to many! And rightly so! However, the people who love music also have many problems pertaining to their love for music. Though most of the CDs and DVDs are available nearby us in shops, some CDs and DVDs have to be downloaded and for this, we need to search for good music download sites. No doubt, this is a tricky job and many of us get deceived because of our inability to choose the right site.

Why we get deceived?
•    We do not perform a comparative study of different music download sites
•    We do not understand the importance of some of the unique features of authentic download sites like 24-hour customer support, quality of music, price range, and other options like fast downloads, volume of song, etc, thus opting for site that doesn’t have these features
•    We do not find a site that gives comparative study of various sites at a glance

Whatever it is, at the end, we suffer because we opt for music download that is not worth of our time and space. After we download, we find many lacunae in the downloaded CDs or DVDs and later we repent for having opted for specific site. This is the reason to satiate our music buds, we need to search first for an authentic site that has good number of features mentioned above so that we experience quality download.

How comparative study helps us get good music download site?

The comparative study of different music download site helps us understand unique features of each site better. We tend to overlook certain features like quality of music and lifetime pricing unless we perform a careful comparative study. The study also helps us understand the loopholes of the sites from which we might have downloaded at times. This helps us avoid such sites in future too.

Though comparison helps us know better about cheap music download, it’s difficult to carry out comparative study without the help of someone who helps us achieve our goal. How good it is if some site helps us carry out the comparative study of different music downloads sites at a glance! Yes, there are sites which help us do this and make us understand the uniqueness of certain popular yet cheap music download sites like Flickr, Unlimited Download Center, Unlimited Media Access, and Klito Pro. Through this study, satiating our music buds is more authentic and pleasing our senses no doubt!

Singing and Recording : What Has Changed?

March 07, 2010  //  Posted by: admin  //  Category: Singer

The techniques used to record vocals these days are essentially the same as those used fifty years ago. Microphone technology has not really progressed; pre-amplifiers and compressors have not really changed either, though they might sport more features and controls. Even though the way we capture the sound has changed some people still prefer to record onto ferrous tape. Digital recording is no longer new either and dates back to the early nineteen eighties.

So what has changed?

Well, software and accessibility. We are now able to manipulate what we record beyond our wildest dreams. When I started recording in the late nineteen eighties I was using an eight track tape machine which meant when you recorded a vocal it had to be a near to perfect as you could get it because timing and pitch could not be altered at all. Today with a few clicks of the mouse you can move every word around to your heart’s content in an audio sequencer. Auto-tune plug-ins can correct pitch issues in very near real time. To top it all, most people with a pc, microphone, pre-amplifier and a modicum of interest in music and recording can have access to all the marvels of the making music in the digital world right there in their front room or bedroom. It does not, however, guarantee they will become the next George Martin or say, Freddy Mercury but it does mean they can record and edit to a pretty decent standard with limited means. For musicians these advantages are obvious as they no longer need to pay for expensive studio time to record their music. Perhaps they will record just the drums at a studio then edit the results to tighten the performance before laying down the other instruments in the comfort of their own home at their own leisure and speed. There is also so much information on the internet that if you do have a technical issue then someone, almost undoubtedly, will have posted a solution on the internet that you can find within minutes. Go back fifty years and you would have struggled to find someone who knew what phase cancellation was in your own city never mind find someone who knew how to correct or avoid it. Skills are therefore becoming less specialized as more information is available to us all.

You would think that this technological revolution would mean there are more amazing singers being discovered. Sadly, the answer is probably no. Why? Well, software is making people lazy and blunting their performance skills. For instance, I rec

ord someone singing a vocal; the take is ok but slightly out of time and out of tune. I try to coax another take out of him but he is tired or needs to be somewhere else. “Come on John, a bit of auto tune and a nip and a tuck here and there and it will be fine” he might tell me. On one level he is right. If it is not too bad then it can be corrected using software and good judgment but that will not make him a better singer. These days everyone thinks they can sing. Probably half the singers in the top forty cannot sing properly and their careers rely on clever engineers and the latest software. Let us face it: you need to have talent or work very hard to become a good singer! If I can offer any advice laymen advice it would be as follows:

It is important with vocals as with all REAL instruments to learn how to ”get them down”. By that I mean how to get a good take down. Identify your weaknesses and work to overcome them rather than relying on software that can sometimes often cheapen the results. Always try to get a good signal recorded. You should not exceed -2 decibels. Try not to record with any equalization and if the performance does not need compression to control it then you can leave that until later too. Always use a pop shield.

A good tip is too really practice singing your lines without the music and indentify where you are going wrong. Then break it down and focus on the bad bits. Let the microphone do the work, you do not need to shout or force it. Try to control your breathing from your diaphragm (this takes practice). Practice your vowels and mouth sounds too as this helps develop clearer execution. Good timing is essential but not difficult to master if you know your lines. Try to know your lines off by heart so that you are not distracted by reading at the same time as you are trying to sing.

Most people tend to sing out of tune when they cannot hear what they are singing properly i.e. the mix is too loud in their headphones or the bass is too loud in their headphones. In fact headphones are difficult to use for many singers; some top producers have the mix coming out of the control room monitors with the singer and microphone in there in front of the monitors (you can use a noise gate to take out the spill later). Try it and see if works for you. Remember not to have the volume too loud or the microphone pointing at the monitors. It is essential, however, to always use a pop shield.

The gap between mediocre and great music is narrower these days as more and more people are having a go at making music and in general we are getting used to hearing mediocre music while thinking it is something special. If you are serious about singing, recording, or making music then strive to improve continually in every area. Do not rely on software to make you sound good rather use it wisely to help nurture and express your music. I record royalty free music for whitebeetle.com and album for artists and I am constantly trying to improve what I do. To me it is an endless quest.

Jessica Simpson Named “2006 Babe Of The Year”

March 03, 2010  //  Posted by: admin  //  Category: Singer

12 year old Shaheen auditions for the judges on Britains Got Talent 2009 singing………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..Whose Loving You by Michael Jackson.

BabesOfHollywood.com a celebrity web site focusing on beautiful female celebrities, today announced that Jessica Simpson has been named it’s 2006 “Babe of the Year”. The award, handed out annually by the web site, is designed to acknowledge the female celebrity who looked the hottest while still being newsworthy during the year. Simpson beat out fellow blondes Paris Hilton and Britney Spears as well as Lindsay Lohan. She also finished ahead of 2005 Babe of The Year, Angelina Jolie, who came in a close second thanks to her role in the celebrity international baby adoption trend.

For Simpson, this “award” comes at the end of a banner year where the singer and sometimes actress was forced to face her popularity alone for the first time post her divorce from boy band singer/sports fan Nick Lachey. Simpson created a consistent buzz on Search Engines, web sites and celebrity blogs throughout the year.

From an artistic standpoint, Simpson was at a creative low. Following her 2005 role as Daisy Duke in the film version of The Dukes of Hazard, Simpson took on her first leading lady role in the low-brow comedy Employee of the Month. At the time of its release in June, Simpson was rumored to be dating her Employee of the Month co-star, comedian Dane Cook who was also her co-host at the Teen Choice Awards. All of this while finishing up her divorce from Lachey. In August, the singer returned to focus on music with the release of her fourth album A Public Affair. Despite a star studded video for it’s title-track first single, which featured friends Eva Longoria, Christina Applegate, Christina Milian and Maria Menounous, the album has sold less than half that of her top selling album Irresistible. On the business side, Simpson continued to leverage her dumb-blonde “brand” following the huge success of her TV show Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. Her most recent endeavor features a line of clip-in hair extensions with her hair stylist and close confidant Ken Paves, which continues to keep her active and in the limelight.

On the personal side, Simpson also had her struggles in 2006, including claims that she was dating and intimately involved with singer and musician John Mayer. Those claims were refuted by Mayer and left another embarrassing mark on the Simpson PR campaign. Making it especially painful were the news reports and photos of her ex-husband Nick Lachey romping around with MTV VJ Vanessa Minnillo.

Jessica Simpson’s most recent newsworthy moment came at the recent Kennedy Center Honors. During a performance saluting Dolly Parton, an influential (and fellow well-endowed) singer, Simpson was brought to tears following the performance. While initially the reason given was that the emotion of performing in front of an idol was too overwhelming, it turned out that the only thing too overwhelming was Simpson’s bust size. Apparently a near Janet Jackson-type wardrobe malfunction was to embarrassing for the pop-star.

Still, through all the ups and downs of the year, and all the press, paparazzi and media commentary, Jessica Simpson has weathered it all, and is certainly no worse for the wear. While her music and film careers may have there ups and downs, Jessica Simpson is still one of the internet’s most popular figures. And what a figure it is. For that reason (and perhaps that reason alone), Jessica Simpson is BabesOfHollywood.com’s 2006 “Babe of the Year”. Congratulations Jessica.
