It better be good – not the “I just cranked this out with a few riffs off a keyboard into a computer” good, but one that really facilitates the strengths of your voice and minimizes your weaknesses. Let’s face it, we all have some singing weaknesses to a certain degree or other. And you will find that you are usually called on for studio work where you shine and where your strengths prevail. Let’s look at some various factors involved in your career. How much time are you currently putting into practice, vocal coaching, etc? I will suggest to you that you ought to be putting in at least 30 – 45 min’s a day minimum and this can be done in the shower, car, or in a vacant room free of distractions. You want to maximize your strengths and figure out where your weaknesses are. This is critical. I will also tell you that finding a good vocal coach, at least one that truly understands commercial singing and not just the theory they’ve been taught and continue to teach, will be hard. Most vocal coaches stress breathing exercises, posture and so forth, and that’s great, but I will tell you that many of the best singers that I have come across, break all of the golden singing rules and make a great living. I’m not suggesting that there are not better breathing patterns than others, nor will I negate a well postured singer, but coaches who truly teach the nuts and bolts of studio and session singing and not from a textbook, are extremely rare. Your next step in you journey to becoming a successful jingle and commercial singer is going to be your relational connection with folks already established in the industry and your ability to put your incredible sounding demo in the hands of producers. You are going to want to start out by figuring out who the main players are in your area in terms of studio singers and contact those that look like you are not going to be in direct competition. You wouldn’t want to be helping someone who might be taking your studio work away and neither will they. I will tell you that singers in general, like to help up and coming singers in the field and investing time in relationships with key session singers will be rewarding with your singing success.

Following up with jingle houses, industrial music houses and studio engineers and producers will take a little investigation, but the conversations you have with session singers will undoubtedly have already given you more than enough names and companies to send your demo reel off to. Your reel ought to have your name, telephone number, year and season of the creation of your demo on virtually any thing that is sent out to producers. Your CD better have this in bright bold colorful letters on the front, the inside jacket and the actual CD. I’ve mentioned it before, but you are really better off sending a a hard copy CD rather than mp3, even though there is no cost associated with email, because 1) you don’t have permission to send via email and 2) it helps to actually see your name and reel, which by the way, can go into their car for review on their way home from work and an mp3 can not without burning a CD of it. If you are tired and extremely busy, are you really going to waste your time on someone you don’t know has clue or not about delivering the singing goods – probably not and neither will they most likely. Don’t email your demo as of yet. I would wait until you have established a relationship with the producer and submit follow up pieces if they ask for it.

I’ve mentioned this before, but having a second follow up reel can be a great boost for singing work and re-establishing your name by once again having your CD cross their desk one more time. This is great for a producer who almost called you for a singing session, but for whatever reason didn’t, and for the producer who somehow lost your CD and never really gave it a listen – In either case, it’s a great idea. 16) Drinking cola before your performance will coat your throat by causing better reverberation.

17) Have diluted squash juice, in case if you don’t want plain water.

Now that you are well and ready, having developed your own unique singing style, you want to launch your singing career. You realistically realized that without any previous professional singing experience it is difficult for your singing career to have a breakthrough.

Singing agents, recording labels, club owners and employer of singers will naturally be cautious before they hire you because they have never heard of you before and what if you fumble on your first professional performance? That will be an embarrassment for them and may even cost them money.

In short, they were well prepared for the singing contest. So you should learn from the mistakes of those contestants that did not make it and learn the good habits from those that made it to the finals.

Armed with these skills, then go and join any singing contests you can find and yes, when you are ready, only when you are ready, then join the American Idol singing contest. The most popular music today either has someone rapping about the hood, or someone rocking out without much singing talent. It seems that lately the art of singing has been lost in making music. I know that this sounds impossible, but more and more popular songs are being put out on the radio by people that can not sing very well at all. What happened to the Stings, the Celine Dions and the Stevie Wonders of the world? Now we are left with Jay Z, Britney Spears, and Korn. Even though many poor singers are getting most of the playing time on the radio, there is a singer out there that can sing very well and has become very popular over the last five years. The singer’s name is Josh Groban.

Josh Groban has always loved music since he was a small child, and he started singing while in the seventh grade. Groban was very happy singing and acting when he was in middle school and then high school, but his grades began to slip, so he took some time off to get his grades back up. When he graduated from high school he was accepted into the Carnegie Mellon Theater department where he studied music and theater. He only stayed in college for one year, because he was signed to a recording contract by a friend of his vocal coach, David Foster.

Josh Groban learned from his classical music teachings when he was young, and he also looked up to and learned from many musicians as well. Some of these other musicians were Radiohead, Paul Simon, Sting, Peter Gabriel, and Bjork. The instrument I mentioned above is called the “karaoki”. This great product of technology contains a chip that carries hundreds or even thousands of songs popularized by famous singers. You just plug this instruments to the corresponding plugs in the televeision set and to a power source, and just by following simple instructions, you are then ready to sing whatever song you choose.

There is a book that comes with the set. In this book are printed the instructions on how to use the karaoki, and it has the names of the songs with their corresponding numbers and artists that popularized them.

I got my set of this wonderful karaoki instrument from a distributor of my old country, the Philippines. But is is now available in the internet. You can just go to google and search “karaoki” or “magic sing”.

To be an effective karaoki singer, you have to follow these 6 great tips:

1.It is preferable to have your own karaoki set. Or you can go to your friend’s house who owns the system. The idea is you have to be able gto practice your songs. The karaoki system includes the scoring system that automatically scores your grade after your performance.

To develop your voice and technic, you have to practice, practice, practice. Why do you think Michael Jordan became the No.1 basketball star? The answer is repeated practice, countless times. That’s the
only way excellence is achieved.

2. You have to try several songs of several artists and test your own voice range with that of the artist’s. You cannot be a Pavaroti if you do not have his range of voice. So explore and listen to the various songs and select the possible songs that you may abe able to use.

3. Once you have selected at least a dozen of songs, try singing them. Follow the words as they are printed on the TV screen, and observe and follow the “tempo” or “timing” of the melody. This is one of the ways to have a higher score.

4. Select at least three songs and master them. How do you master them? Again, practice, practice, practice. After you have mastered three songs, select the best one as ” your special song”. And choose the second best song as a reserve, just in case the crowd wants you to sing one more time.

5. While you are practicing, get somebody else to listen to you and act as your critique so that you can
improve your technique or performance. Your best friend or your spouse who have your best interests is the best source of opinion about your performance.

6. The best etiquette or rule to follow during the karaoki session: do not monopolize the singing sessions. Give chances to other singers. Remember how to be good in conversation, “don’t be a bore”. To shine as a karaoki star, sing your best song, and maybe followed by your second best. And the audience will crave for more of your performance. So stop there, you do not want to over-expose your acquired new talent.
